Air House
Islington, London
Residential
1/15
'Walking on air.' London is awash with beautiful terraced houses, but they’re often dark with disjointed spaces and a lack of flow. So how could we transform this north London terrace, open up the core of the house, let in the light, and allow one space to flow easily into another? It was all about the staircase. We worked closely with specialist metalworkers to design an extra-thin floating metal staircase with thousands of perforations. Every perforation, every crack, plays its part in grabbing the natural light and filtering it downwards. With 45% of the staircase made of air, not metal, the space both above and below is now sculpted by natural light. And how does it feel to walk from one floor to another? It feels like walking on air, like hovering or floating. Clever design, skilled craftsmanship and – of course – daylight have completely transformed this previously dark, fragmented house and made it a joy to live in.
